Where to Take a First Date in Manchester

In the City Centre

Manchester Art Gallery on Mosley Street is free and quiet on weekday afternoons, with a café on the ground floor. Round the corner, the John Rylands Research Institute and Library on Deansgate looks like a cathedral built for books and makes a memorable first stop. The Northern Quarter is full of independent cafés with proper chairs, and Mackie Mayor in a restored market hall has long shared tables, which take the pressure off a first conversation.

By the Water

Salford Quays is flat, open and pleasant for a walk, with The Lowry for a show or a coffee afterwards. Further out, Dunham Massey near Altrincham has deer, gardens and level paths.

On the East Side

For Tameside members, Ashton's market area and the Portland Basin by the canal are easy, local options, and the Metrolink makes the city centre a simple trip.

Plan for the Rain, Enjoy the Date

Manchester's weather is famous for a reason, so pick a first date with somewhere to shelter. Indoor markets, galleries and cafés beat a park when the forecast turns. Wear shoes you can walk in, bring an umbrella that fits in your bag, and you will be the calmest person there. Our date night outfit ideas cover the rest.

Getting About for a Greater Manchester Date

The Metrolink is the easiest way to meet in the middle. The Ashton line runs from Tameside straight into Piccadilly, the Altrincham line reaches the southern suburbs, and the Bury and Rochdale lines cover the north. A city-centre meeting point like St Ann's Square or the Royal Exchange is easy for everyone. If you would rather stay local, Stockport's Underbanks and Market Place have independent cafés, and Bolton's Market Hall has a food court with plenty of space to sit. Most of the region is less than an hour from any other part, so search as far as you would happily travel on a weeknight.
