Getting Around for a Date
Essex is a long county, and Southend to Colchester is a fair drive. Agree a halfway point such as Chelmsford, which is well served by trains on both the Southend and Colchester lines. Much of Essex has an easy train into London too, so a date in the city is never out of the question if you both fancy a change of scene.

Market Towns and Quieter Corners
Away from the big towns, Essex has some lovely quieter spots. Saffron Walden has a market square, half-timbered houses and Bridge End Garden, which is free to wander. Coggeshall and Maldon are both easy, characterful choices: Maldon's Promenade Park looks out over the Blackwater estuary and its sailing barges, with level paths and benches. Mersea Island, reached by a causeway that floods at high tide, has seafood shacks and beach huts; check the tide times before you go, or it may be a longer date than you planned.
